Lost Pets, Strays, and Adoption Candidates

Lost Pets, Strays, and Adoption Candidates

Our veterinary hospital is the holding facility for stray animals in the city and county. There is no shelter in the city of Abilene, Kansas.

  • What does that mean?

It means that when our local police force finds stray dogs that are running around without their owners, these dogs are taken to us for us to find their owners. We scan for microchips, then post the dogs on Facebook for 3 days and spread the word as much as possible, looking for their owners. When the 3 days are over, the dogs are then posted for adoption.

We are NOT a shelter, and we do not take in animals that need to be re-homed.

  • Can I leave my animal with Abilene Animal Hospital to have you find a new home for them?

NO. We are NOT a shelter, and do not take in animals that need to be re-homed. We are a hospital first and foremost, but we do what we can for the strays of Dickinson county. Please also be advised that animal abandonment is a crime, and we work closely with our local police force in these cases.

Please call our office for an up-to-date list of rescue facilities!

  • Adopting a friend

Please keep in mind that since we are not a shelter, our pets are only available as first come, first serve! We encourage families to bring in any other pets in the household to meet any dog you are interested in adopting. Since we are not a shelter, we can not take these pets back once they leave!

We offer complimentary Rabies and Distemper/parvovirus vaccination, and examinations to all pets that are adopted from us. Pets will have had a fecal and heartworm test performed prior to going to their forever homes. Depending on your new pet's needs, we can also perform further vaccinations. All pets must be spayed or neutered within one year of adoption.

Pets that are spayed or neutered at time of intake are $50.  If a male is intact there is a $150 adoption fee and intact females are $200.  These prices are the cost to get your new pet spayed or neutered. We are happy to refund adoption fees if a pet is spayed or neutered at any veterinary facility after adoption, but if you choose to have your new pet spayed or neutered with us, there will be no extra charge.

  • Come visit us!

We would love for you to come meet the pets we have that are currently adoptable! We try to afford you the ability to speak with our kennel manager and answer any questions you may have about your future furry friend. Please call and set up a time, so we know when to expect you!
