Artificial Insemination with fresh, cooled shipped, and frozen semen
Mares can be bred at Abilene Animal Hospital with fresh semen from on site collection, with cooled shipped, or frozen semen from just about anywhere in the country. Using cooled shipped and frozen semen allows the horse owner to reduce the expense and time it takes to haul your mare. Semen that is cool shipped is usually fertile for 24 to 48 hours while frozen semen can be kept indefinitely and inseminated as needed by thawing it appropriately. Breeding mares with frozen semen is more time consuming and less available than breeding with cooled shipped semen. The increased time consumption is due to the necessity to palpation and ultrasound the mare every 6 to 12 hours while cooled shipped semen usually only requires every day to every other day palpation and ultrasound.
Although using transported semen is very effective and successful, it is not necessarily the best method for all mares and stallions. If you want to breed your mare with shipped semen you should always inquire about the stallion's previous breeding success. Some relevant questions to ask are: %motility at collection, 24, 48, and 72 hours, total conception for last season, number of live foals last season, percent conception rate per shipment, and number of breedings per conception. These fertility statistics are very important and you should be aware of them before signing any contracts.
